NOTE (not part of the rules). Please pay particular attention to Rule 7 which is the one most likely to need to be referred to. Challenges have been lost because teams did not challenge correctly or were unable to produce the question or answer sheets. Please ensure that someone brings these rules to each quiz as they offer guidance that could resolve most questions that arise.
The League is to be known as the Bridgend & District Quiz League.
An Annual General Meeting will be held at the end of each season to elect officers, approve annual reports and accounts and consider and vote upon changes to this constitution and these rules.
Motions to change the Constitution or Rules and topics for discussion at the AGM must be with the Secretary in writing(or printing) at least four weeks before the AGM.
A Committee will be elected to run the League consisting of: Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Publicity Officer & Fixture Secretaryand Second Division Representative.
Other persons may be co-opted at an AGM.
All committee positions are held until the next AGM.
At any general or Annual General meeting, one delegate per team has one vote. Committee members have one vote for these meetings and at Committee meetings. If a team has a team member on the League Committee they may still have a delegate with a vote.
The Chairman may use a casting vote in any meeting in addition to his own vote.
The signatories for cheques shall be any two from Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer.
The Committee shall be responsible for organising:
1) A Knockout Cup
2) The Muriel Williams Cup
3) A presentation evening
The Muriel Williams Cup event will be the registration evening and any team wishing to be in the League must register by paying its subscription, as determined at each AGM, to the Treasurer on or before this night.
Only registered members of paid up teams may compete in any competition and cannot play for any other team in the League during that season.
Any team playing from a pub or club within ten miles of Bridgend War Memorial will be eligible to take part.
A team may participate in any particular quiz with one to four players only.
Questions are to be sent in a sealed envelop, signed on the back by the quiz setter, to every home venue.
A team that does not honour a fixture receives no points if:
1) They do not attend the venue at all, or
2) They arrive at the venue one quarter of an hour or more later than the scheduled start of every League game (at on Monday evenings) the opposing team will then be awarded two points unless the late team has sufficient reason that is acceptable to the other team. Disputes and genuine problems shall be referred to the Committee, whose decision shall be final.
The onus is on both teams to notify the Fixture/Results Secretary of the results and no points will be awarded to either team unless the Fixture/Results Secretary is informed within three days of the match.
RULES FOR LEAGUE QUIZZES
The League season, depending on the size of the League, shall start in September or October and end in April or May.
There will be two divisions, each competing team to play the others twice in the League competition.
The Committee may organise such competitions as may be appropriate.
The question distributor will receive a sum, to be fixed at each AGM, as a contribution to expenses.
Each quiz match will be played on the basis of 60 questions. One quarter of the questions to be on sports subjects.
32 Written questions: 24 General Knowledge and 8 Sport. For the write-down questions
30 seconds will be allowed to answer each question, one match point for each correct answer. After the 32 questions, answer sheets shall be passed promptly to the other team for scoring.
Individual round: Same as the Cup (Rule 13) but 5 General Knowledge and 3 Sport. The team that is behind at this point go first (if level, toss for it). In Div.1, one person in each team may answer two questions, in Div.2, two persons in each team may answer two questions.
Call out: 10 pairs of A and B questions, 8 pairs General Knowledge, 2 pairs Sport. Teams to swap over, A for B, going first for going second, after the fifth pair of questions. For these call-out questions: The team that is behind at this point (if level, toss for it) can choose either to go first, answering the A questions or to go second, answering the B questions. Also see Rules R10 and R11.
Two League points are to be awarded to a team winning a match, one point for a draw.
a) Immediately the answer is given by the quizmaster, the challenger must inform the quizmaster and instruct him/her to initial the questioning dispute AT THAT TIME.
b) At the conclusion of the quiz (and only if the result is affected) the challenging team must immediately inform the opposing team captain and the quizmaster of their intention to refer the matter for adjudication and retain the question sheet and their answer sheet signed by the opposing captain. The challenging answer to a call-out question must be written on the answer sheet before the opposing captain signs it.
c) The League Secretary must be informed within three days by the challenging team that adjudication is required.
d) The League Secretary will, from time to time, convene a committee comprising three Committee members (who are not from either of the teams who may be affected by any such adjudication). Challenging teams will be informed of the date and venue.
e) The onus is on the challengers to prove their point. This will involve submission of written or printed evidence to the committee and must be accompanied by (a) the question sheet initialled by the quizmaster and (b) the answer sheet signed by the opposing captain showing the answer given to the question challenged. The adjudicating committee’s decision is final.
RULES FOR KNOCKOUT CUP AND PLATE COMPETITIONS
There will be 30 pairs of questions, A and B.
The team winning the toss can choose either to go first, answering the A questions one to fifteen or to go second answering the B questions. For questions sixteen to thirty, teams will change questions and the order of answering them (i.e. B always comes second).
Thirty seconds will be allowed for an answer, with a warning after twenty five seconds. If the question is passed across for a bonus point, five seconds will be allowed for answering.
A correct answer earns two points, correctly answering a question that has been passed across earns one point.
At least five pairs of tie-breaker questions of a suitable kind shall be provided. In the event of a tie, the questions shall be asked until there is a winner and a loser after asking a pair of questions. There will be one single last question of an open-ended kind for write-down answers, the most nearly correct answer wins.
Special rounds will be held after question ten and question twenty, these to be an individual round and a roll-up round.
There are eight questions numbered one to eight.
The team taking the A questions in the first half go first.
The captain of the team selects a number from those not yet asked.
The question master discloses the topic and the captain selects an individual in his team to answer the question. If the answer is correct it is worth three points, if incorrect, the opposing team may answer (they may confer before answering) and gain one point if correct. Each individual may answer one question only; this includes teams competing with less than four players
Each team has five questions, teams will answer alternately, 1A, 1B etc. The team that is behind in points has the choice of A or B questions and of going first or second. If the teams are level, the team that chooses will be decided by toss of a coin.
At the start of each pair of questions, the topic will be announced. Teams have the choice when their turn comes of taking the question or sticking. Once a team has stuck, that is the end of the round for them, keeping their points.
Each correct answer is worth two points. If an incorrect answer is given, that is the end of the round for that team and they score no points for the round. If all five questions are answered correctly an additional two points are earned.
